Joseph was the mortal foster father of Jesus Christ (his real father being God). He was a carpenter and the husband of Mary the Virgin. Of course, at first, when he found out she was expecting a baby, he decided he shouldn't marry her, but an angel appeared before him, telling him not to be afraid to marry Mary.

Much later, because Caesar Augustus said every man had to be counted and taxed at his birthplace, Joseph had to take Mary to Bethlehem, all of whose inns were full, so they had to stay in a stable while Mary bore her baby.

Much later, while Jesus was still a baby, Joseph saved Him from being killed by the soldiers of Herod the Great by taking Him and His mother to Egypt and not leaving until Herod's death, when they went back to Nazareth.
